How it happened
Getaround was a peer-to-peer car-sharing platform that let owners rent out their cars through a keyless app, backed by SoftBank's Vision Fund, Menlo Ventures and Toyota. It went public via SPAC in December 2022 at about $1.2B β one of the last, shakiest deSPAC deals of the cycle β and the stock collapsed almost immediately. Employees saw the fragility early: Glassdoor reviews counted three mass layoff rounds before the listing even happened, and described strategy lurching with each executive reshuffle, and unease when the founder cycled back in as CEO in 2022. Delisted to the OTC market in 2024, it shut US operations in February 2025 and moved to dissolve and liquidate in 2026.
