How it happened
Inflection AI built the Pi chatbot and raised $1.3B at a $4B valuation in 2023 from Microsoft, Nvidia and Bill Gates. Unable to monetize Pi against enormous compute costs, it was effectively absorbed in March 2024 when Microsoft hired its founders and most staff and paid ~$650M to license its technology. Inflection survives as a B2B shell.
