How it happened

Royole Corporation was a Shenzhen maker of ultra-thin flexible AMOLED displays that Liu Zihong, a Stanford PhD also known as Bill Liu, founded in 2012. It unveiled the FlexPai, billed as the world's first foldable smartphone, in 2018, ahead of Samsung.

Press reports put its valuation near $6B after a 2020 pre-IPO financing, but the company burned cash building its own fabs and devices while failing to win major smartphone-maker supply deals. A withdrawn STAR Market IPO, years of unpaid salaries and mounting creditor claims followed.

On November 18, 2024 the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court ordered Royole into bankruptcy liquidation; its plants and roughly 2,000 machines were later auctioned, the final lot selling for about ¥504M (~$70M).
