How it happened

BlackSky, founded in 2014 by Jason Andrews, operates a constellation of high-frequency Earth-imaging satellites and sells geospatial intelligence to defense and intelligence agencies. It went public on the NYSE in September 2021 through a SPAC merger with Osprey Technology Acquisition at a $1.5B pro-forma equity value, trading above a $1B market capitalization at the time.

Heavy spending to build and replace satellites, plus competition from Maxar and Planet, kept it lossmaking and pulled its value below the unicorn mark. Defense contracts have since made the stock volatile, and it has crossed back above $1B at times in 2026 before slipping under again, a fallen unicorn that keeps testing the line.

A smaller set of Glassdoor reviews skewed positive, with the usual growth-stage gripes about middle management and process.

Source: GeekWire / SatelliteToday: SPAC merger with Osprey Technology Acquisition Corp at a ~$1.5B pro-forma equity value ($1.1B enterprise value), NYSE: BKSY from Sep 2021; a debut near $11-12 on ~113M shares implied ~$1.2B. The stock has oscillated around $1B through 2026 (e.g. ~$1.33B in Jun 2026; ~$813M on Oct 12, 2026 per stockanalysis.com) on defense-contract momentum, so the hide-above-$1B quote rule will toggle it.
