How it happened

Character.AI let people build and chat with custom AI characters, and for a stretch it was one of the stickiest consumer AI apps anywhere, with users averaging hours on it a day.

Founded in 2021 by ex-Google researchers Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, it reached a ~$1B valuation in March 2023 on a $150M Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz. In August 2024 Google paid $2.7B to license its models and rehire both founders β€” a deal that cashed out investors at a roughly $2.5B implied valuation without actually acquiring the company.

The startup kept running as a husk, pivoting from training its own models to chasing growth, but never covered its soaring inference costs. It was then sued after the suicide of a 14-year-old user and drew state safety investigations; it settled some claims, added guardrails, and banned minors.

After cycling through several CEOs in two years, Character Technologies filed for Chapter 11 in October 2026, naming Disney as a $20M stalking-horse bidder for its assets and warning the platform would be wound down without a better offer.
