How it happened

Doma (formerly States Title) used machine learning to streamline title insurance and closings, and was valued near $3B at its 2021 SPAC listing. Rising rates crushed mortgage and refinance volumes, the stock collapsed below $1B, and in 2023 Title Resources Group bought it in a fire-sale valued around $530M. Glassdoor reviews chart the decline: reviewers counted round after round of layoffs β€” five or six by some accounts β€” as headcount fell from roughly 2,200 toward a few hundred, some cuts landing weeks after staff were told none were coming. Employees said the automation central to its pitch underdelivered and largely worked only for refinancings, amid constant strategy pivots and RSU pay that evaporated.
