How it happened

Exscientia was spun out of the University of Dundee in 2012 by professor Andrew Hopkins to design drug candidates with AI. In January 2020 it said DSP-1181, designed with Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma, was the first AI-designed drug to enter human trials.

After a $225M Series D led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2 in April 2021, it listed on Nasdaq that October at $22 a share. The stock closed its first day at $27.10, a value Global Venturing put at more than $3.2B. The shares slid through 2022, leaving it worth about $0.65B by year-end.

Recursion agreed in August 2024 to buy Exscientia in an all-stock deal that Reuters valued at $688M. When it closed on November 20, 2024, Recursion's filings valued the shares issued at about $617M.
