How it happened
GoStudent, founded in Vienna in 2016 by Felix Ohswald and Gregor Müller, matches school pupils with paid one-to-one online tutors. Pandemic demand made it Europe's first edtech unicorn in June 2021. In January 2022 Prosus led a €300M Series D at a €3B valuation, about $3.4B.
GoStudent lost €220M that year as demand cooled, then cut staff in three rounds and said it was profitable by March 2024. Prosus paid $226M for its stake in 2022. Its annual reports show it valuing that stake at $160M in March 2023, $68M in 2024, $39M in 2025 and $24M in March 2026.
Prosus valued its stake at $24M, about 89% below what it paid, which implies roughly $360M for the whole company. Freelance tutors reviewing the platform mostly faulted low pay and unpaid trial lessons.
Source: Reuters via Nippon.com (June 22, 2021): €205M Series C at €1.4B. FE News / company release and tech.eu (Jan 11, 2022): €300M Series D led by Prosus at €3B ($3.40B at the ECB rate of 1.1336 for Jan 11, 2022). Trending Topics (June 28, 2024): Prosus paid $226M in March 2022 for about 8%. Prosus annual reports, note on investments at fair value through OCI (unlisted): GoStudent stake $160M (Mar 31, 2023) and $68M (Mar 31, 2024) in the FY2024 report; $39M (Mar 31, 2025) in the FY2025 report; $24M (Mar 31, 2026) in the FY2026 report. The drop is keyed to 1 − 24/226 = 89.4% on Prosus's own stake (implying about $361M for the company); these are marks on Prosus's holding, not a company valuation. TechCrunch (Mar 25, 2024): profitable, losses of €89M in 2021 and €220M in 2022, a $95M equity-and-debt raise in Aug 2023.
