How it happened
Markforged builds industrial 3D printers that produce strong carbon-fiber- and metal-reinforced parts, and went public in 2021 via a SPAC merger valuing it around $2.1B amid the additive-manufacturing hype. The market proved far smaller and slower than the SPAC pitch implied; revenue disappointed, losses persisted, and the stock collapsed. Employee reviews from the slide described the grind inside β repeated layoff rounds, several arriving after assurances that jobs were safe, priorities that shifted constantly, rushed product launches, and a steady exodus of veteran talent. In April 2025 Nano Dimension, on a consolidation spree that also swept up Desktop Metal, acquired Markforged for about $116M ($5.00 a share), a fraction of its debut value.
