How it happened

Volocopter developed electric vertical-takeoff air taxis and reached a $1.7B valuation in a 2023 round. Certification delays and a cash crunch arrived before it could carry paying passengers at scale. The company filed for insolvency at the end of December 2024. Employees had long flagged the money problem: Glassdoor reviews repeatedly noted the company generated no revenue and survived entirely on investor funding, and warnings about the funding situation sharpened through 2024 into 2025, when reviewers flatly described a firm out of cash with no product yet in service. Others cited short-sighted handling of aircraft certification and constant organizational churn β€” shifting strategy, departing colleagues, and leaders many said gave no clear direction.
