Chapter 11 (2022); wound down

How it happened

Celsius Network was a US crypto lending and yield platform valued at about $3B in 2021. It promised high returns on crypto deposits but ran a risky, illiquid balance sheet; amid the 2022 downturn it froze withdrawals and filed for Chapter 11 in July 2022, then wound down. Its founder was later sentenced to 12 years for fraud. Glassdoor reviews describe a growth-at-all-costs culture that insiders said sidelined risk controls β€” a risk-team reviewer and others flagged how opaque its risks were, well before the freeze. Multiple reviewers cited money mismanagement and an overhiring spree, and staff paid partly in the company's own CEL token watched that pay collapse as the token cratered.
