How it happened

Hippo was a home-insurance startup ('insurtech') that used data and smart-home devices to streamline coverage, reaching a ~$5B valuation when it went public via SPAC in 2021. Like many post-SPAC insurtechs, it faced heavy underwriting losses and investor skepticism, and its market cap collapsed well below $1B. It now trades around $0.68B following a reverse stock split, roughly 86% under its peak.
