How it happened

Wefox was a European insurtech that reached a $4.5B valuation in a July 2022 round led by Mubadala. Unsustainable cash burn forced a deep restructuring, a €170M emergency refinancing, and the sale of operations in several countries. By January 2025 its valuation had fallen below $1B, stripping it of unicorn status. Glassdoor reviews from the restructuring years described chronic strategy churn β€” employees said priorities shifted almost monthly β€” alongside recurring layoff rounds, heavy turnover in the executive ranks, stalled pay, and a startup-era culture that insiders felt had hardened into a colder, numbers-driven one.
