How it happened

Luminar Technologies developed lidar sensors for autonomous and assisted driving, reaching a ~$11B valuation after its 2020 SPAC listing, before slow automotive adoption, heavy losses and cash pressures erased roughly 99% of its value. It filed for Chapter 11 in late 2025, shares moving to OTC (LAZRQ) and its Iris/Halo IP sold to MicroVision for $33M in February 2026. Employee reviews traced the decay: staff bristled at extravagant parties and resort offsites while the company burned through cash, then watched bonuses, 401(k) match and stock perks stripped away one by one as layoffs β€” roughly a fifth of staff in mid-2024 β€” and constant priority pivots became routine, many openly doubting Luminar had a future.
