How it happened

Newsela is an education-technology company whose leveled K-12 reading articles are widely used by teachers. It was last valued near $1.08B (Series D, 2021) at the height of the pandemic edtech boom; as schools returned to in-person learning, engagement and revenue slid, and it fell out of the $1B unicorn club while remaining private. Glassdoor reviews from 2022-2024 trace the reversal from inside: a rapid pandemic hiring spree that unwound through several layoff rounds into late 2023, a new CEO and near-constant reorgs, and morale that sank as engineering, QA and the once-central DEIB teams were pared back. Many longtime employees lamented how far the culture had drifted from the mission-driven workplace they first joined.
