How it happened

Matterport is a US spatial-data company known for 3D digital twins of physical spaces, peaking around $2.9B after a 2021 SPAC merger. Its share price slid well below $1B as growth slowed and post-SPAC sentiment soured. In 2024 CoStar Group agreed to acquire Matterport for about $1.6B, but the company had already fallen below unicorn status in the public market before the deal. Glassdoor reviews from those years described layoffs so regular employees called them clockwork, with roughly a quarter of staff cut most summers after the 2021-22 hiring spree overshot demand, and recurring complaints that leadership changed strategy and priorities constantly without a settled roadmap, even as they praised the underlying technology.
