How it happened

View Inc makes smart electrochromic glass for buildings and went public via SPAC in 2021 at a valuation around $1.6B. Heavy losses, warranty-liability and accounting issues, and a cash crunch crushed the stock, and it filed for Chapter 11 in 2024 (~-99% from peak). Glassdoor reviews paint a consistent picture from years earlier: employees repeatedly described a top-down culture of fear and micromanagement, recurring layoffs β€” several of which staff said were made to cut costs ahead of the planned IPO β€” and heavy spending of investor cash with little profit after more than a decade and over $1B raised. Many also doubted the pitch, calling View a glass manufacturer dressed as a tech company.
